  • Description

The PSS Shaft Seal is the #1 selling marine mechanical seal worldwide and is installed as standard equipment by many of the worlds most reputable boat builders and boat yards. The PSS Shaft Seal is also recognized as the premiere retrofit (aftermarket) seal on the world market. Boat builders and boat yards recognize the advantages and value of installing the PSS as it eliminates the maintenance, constant adjustment & cost associated with traditional packing type glands. Aside from these benefits, the PSS Shaft Seal helps to eliminate water in the bilge (100% water tight) & wear to the propeller shaft.

How Does It Work?

1. Two nitrile o-rings seal the stainless steel rotor to the shaft and will not experience wear.

2. A primary set screw and a backup set screw (2 sets) are used to secure the stainless steel rotor to the shaft.

3. A seal is created between the two flat surfaces of the carbon stator and the stainless steel rotor.

4. Water is fed into the PSS Shaft Seal for cooling/lubricating the seal faces on high speed vessels.

5. The stationary carbon stator is attached to the nitrile bellow, which is attached to the stern tube (shaft log).

PSS Dripless Shaft Seal Pressure Release for Sailing Craft

When running in reverse, water entering the shaft log can spray into the engine compartment through the nipple on top of the dripless shaft seal stator. All units now include this nipple for power boats to inject water (usually from their raw water pumps) to cool the shaft. A sailboat engine runs at much lower RPMs and doesn't need water cooling. To solve this issue, I used a solution posted here by another customer and recommended by PSY. I attached a hose from the stator nipple to a compression release fitting (like the one used on a radiator). The cost is about $12USD. I mounted the device above the waterline, using a piece of PVC pipe sitting in a plastic mount I found at a hardware store. (The fitting sits next to my exhaust water vented loop that prevents seawater backflow into the engine.) Without the compression release fitting, the open nipple on the stator could spray seawater into the engine compartment.

Love this PYI product!

The original PYI PSS shaft seal was installed 15 years ago and still looks pristine! I am replacing it while my Pearson 28-2 is in the boatyard for bottom paint. I am also having the cutlass bearing replaced as well as having a new R&D Flexible coupler installed. The PYI shaft seal and R&D coupler are only being replaced because I feel they have exceeded their recommended life and not because routine inspection has shown any problems. These are great products!
