KiwiGrip Non-Skid Paint

KiwiGrip

Part Number: KG-1WP-R

Attention!

KiwiGrip is a water-based product that needs to be kept above freezing temperatures when in the pouch/can to remain usable. Because of this, air freight is recommended when ordering and shipping KiwiGrip between the months October 15th – April 15th, when temperatures are likely to dip below freezing. Please note that if you select ground transportation during these freeze windows, you are doing so at your own risk. PYI will not be held responsible for any loss of product due to any unforeseen freezing conditions. Should you wish to source KiwiGrip locally to avoid potential freezing, please review our KiwiGrip Dealer Map to find your nearest distributor. Please check back often as new stores, chandleries, yards, and contractors are being added frequently.

* When storing leftover KiwiGrip for re-coat purposes, be sure to keep it above freezing. This will ensure that it will be good to use when needed.

  • Description

KiwiGrip is a revolutionary, durable, non-toxic, non-skid coating that spreads quickly and easily with our proprietary roller, offering a beautiful, high traction surface. By varying the application technique, the texture can be adjusted from a rolled pleasure boat texture to an industrial aggressive workboat texture. As a homogeneous material, KiwiGrip doesn't suffer from the problems encountered with products filled with sand, walnut shells, beads, rubber fleck, or other fillers. Coatings with fillers tend to wear through, and the fillers fall out leaving an unsafe deck that's hard to clean and even harder to re-coat.

"We are very pleased with the results, The deck looks great and a single coat covered the unevenly colored deck (mostly white with brown patches of epoxy where I'd made repairs). Here is a tip other customers might find helpful. I used a 4" plastic squeegee-type slotted trowel to evenly spread the goop before my wife rolled in the texture using the roller. It allowed me to spread an even layer and worked quite well. Thanks."

"KiwiGrip was a dream to use. It is a quick, no-mess way of cleaning up tired old decks and applying a superior non-skid finish. It covered all of the spots where I have moved deck fittings and filled the unwanted holes with epoxy. They literally vanish under KiwiGrip. So far my KiwiGrip decks have endured record heat, kids, burning embers, beer, ice, snow, and sea otters without a mark. My next boat will also have KiwiGrip on the decks."

Kiwi Grip purchase & use

Used Kiwi grip on my cockpit floor that had to be cut out and patch due to delamination. Went on real nice and was easy to apply. Masking the area took longer than the actual application.
Promt shipping too.

Time will be the judge

Practice is essential. It took us the first liter to complete a learning curve. The other eight liters went on as advertised. We found that rolling on thick and not rolling again after tacky worked best for us. After 24 hrs cure time I love it, looks fantastic. As far as wear and tare, ease of cleaning and color retention only time will tell.

What a Wonderful Pleasure to Use!!

We own a well used 40 year old sailboat that is raced, cruised and everything in between. It had it share of dings and was showing its age.. A friend recommended Kiwigrip. The fact that it was water soluble and could be done in stages really impressed me in my research of it.Our boat was white with grey non skid. I was so happy to see that PYI's grey was lighter than what we had as the deck got so hot in the Florida sun. I started with the nonskid area, sanding and repairing every inch. It took me 6 weeks to go over our 34' boat. When I started with the Kiwiwgrip, I followed it to the letter. A large tarp was placed over each area as I worked so I was always applying in the shade. It was sheer joy to find there was no odor to it! To be able to work in sections and then come back the next day and continue onward seemed so unusual but it looks flawless. Since I had ordered 4 quarts, I had 4 rollers to work with and had all 4 on handles ready to go. A bucket of water was kept in the cockpit. As one roller seemed to fill up with paint, I placed it in the bucket and used a clean one. Each day I would take the rollers home, clean them thoroughly and bring them back for a fresh start. Since all the work was really in the preparation, It took me 4 days to actually cover the nonskid. It covered the darker grey existing nonskid beautifully. I kept a large waste basket on deck and placed the tape in it as I removed it. Don't try to use a plastic bag!
I was so pleased with the professional look of the nonskid. Now the white smooth area looked terrible in comparison. I decided to wait a few months before beginning preparing that area and think about what I wanted to put on that. Comparing sanding, priming, sanding, priming, painting, sanding and finally painting again to the simplicity of Kiwigrip, I thought "why not use white Kiwigrip with a smooth foam roller? Even if two coats are needed it is so much easier than any other product." I experimented on a fiberglass board with the extra grey I had and was happy with the look when using a small smooth foam roller. So, this month I ordered 4 white Kiwigrip and started prepping. Being smooth, the dings really showed and again days were spent in preparation and sanding, sanding, sanding. I decided to take home all the lazarette lids and do them inside the garage and was very happy with the results. Then I went on to the boat, wondering if I would have trouble with runs on the upright bulkheads etc. To my joy, not one run occurred! The Kiwigrip seemed to grip the area on which I was rolling and all went on smoothly. It dried looking almost shockingly white. The finish is more matte than shiny but after 40 years our previous white was not shiny. The ability to stop and start the project and the ease of water cleanup, no toxic smell has made me a promoter of Kiwigrip to all my friends with older boats. Using Starbrite Nonskip Deck Cleaner, once again following directions and allowing it time to work, I have not had a problem with stains, but then I don't fish and have blood and guts on the boat. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate Kiwigrip a 12!!!
